A Voice in the Wilderness

John 1:19-34

Graphics Options

The Narrative Alive graphics are designed with careful thought about how they relate to the text. We've provided possible sermon themes for each graphic to help you choose the direction that best fits your sermon.
Option A
"Who Are You?"
Sermon themes:
John finds his identity not in human recognition but in God’s purposes. True identity is rooted in calling, not status.
John knows who he is. Identity begins with humility: knowing what God has NOT called us to be. Spiritual maturity begins with surrendering worldly pursuit, the ambition for title and success.
John denies being the Messiah. He declares himself, out in the wilderness, the voice preparing the way. Like John, we are voices pointing others to Jesus.

When it comes to identity, the DNA strand is the key to our genetic code, to who we are. The DNA strand in this graphic captures the core of the Pharisees’ question of John, “Who are you?” And the greater question about Jesus’ identity.
Witness to the Light
Option B
Witness to the Light
Sermon themes:
John’s sense of self comes from his relationship to Jesus. He is not the light but, instead, bears witness to the Light. Our role is to let Jesus’ glory shine, not our own.
Our witness begins with our own encounter with Jesus. Once we understand who Jesus is, true testimony flows from that personal revelation.
Witnessing means pointing others away from ourselves and toward Jesus, letting Jesus’ light shine in and through our lives.

The light in this graphic is everywhere. But it is mostly a faint background, except for the bold area where it becomes bright and visible. Which is precisely what John is doing as a “witness to the light.” Making the Light visible.
Quest for a Deliverer
Option C
Quest for a Deliverer
Sermon themes:
The religious leaders’ question, “Who are you?”, is a reflection of humanity’s longing for someone to rescue us. Even today, people look to politics, status, and organized religion to save them. Yet only Jesus can truly deliver us.
God often works quietly and unexpectedly. Our deliverance is not in what we expected but in the person of Jesus.
True deliverance comes not by power or politics. It comes through sacrifice and God’s action in and through Jesus. Jesus is the deliverer we all need.

The image in this graphic is actually a photo of a canyon from above. But it could also be seen as looking up from the canyon floor. Whichever way you see it, the winding path through the canyon is symbolic of the long, wandering of God’s people through the wilderness. And their continual deep quest for a deliverer, culminating now in Jesus.
